Tortuga Philosophy Cafe: Philosophy vs Science

Philosophy vs Science
Our next session will concern the relation between philosophy and science. Traditionally, philosophy was seen as the queen of the sciences, but more recent thinkers have demoted her to a lowly servant of the empirical sciences—a handmaiden.
We will consider this question in detail during our next meeting on Saturday December 6th.
Related to this is the epistemological issue of different kinds of knowledge. In some sense, the division between science and philosophy is downstream from the answer to the more fundamental question, “what can we know?” Are we bound to only ever learn about how certain models can “map” reality, or is a deeper, more personal participation in the world possible? Are all of our thoughts only directed towards the contingent and the historical, or is it possible to apprehend “timeless truths,” the verité éternelle of which Leibniz speaks, as many traditional philosophers have thought?
This is a big topic, and as with last week, there will be no necessary reading beforehand. Just like last week, I will give a brief lecture on the topic and then we will discuss.
If this sounds interesting, then I suggest you join us. You can sign up with Stripe here, or with PayPal. We also now have the option of purchasing 6 sessions for $50.
As always, feel free to DM me for more details.
